An Ecology of Conversations

· Leadership, Metacrisis

Yesterday, I hosted the speaker sessions at Going Electric. As usual, they covered a range of subjects:

  • Practical advice about EVs
  • Insulation and heat pumps
  • Education opportunities
  • Emerging jobs

What was most interesting to me was how much all of these talks had in common - how the same themes and ideas ran through the whole day.

Whether we’re talking about EVs, solar panels, or net zero, it’s our attitude to change that really matters.

When we meet ideas that we might find challenging, it’s worth considering:

  • Am I looking for excuses?
  • Or am I looking for solutions?

Looking for excuses is easy - it’s not difficult to find reasons why something might be hard.

Looking for solutions involves getting uncomfortable, and dealing with complexity.

Perhaps most importantly, finding excuses is also avoiding responsibility.

Looking for solutions, on the other hand, involves accepting responsibility.

PS The “ecology of conversations” idea came from Nora Bateson, via a brilliant podcast episode with Nate Hagens.
