Mark Carney Gets It

· Metacrisis, Leadership

While he doesn’t use the word, the metacrisis runs through Mark Carney’s recent speech at Davos:

  • “The strongest would exempt themselves when convenient.”
  • “Trade rules were enforced asymmetrically.”
  • “International law is applied with varying rigour depending on the identity of the accused.”

While he acknowledges some of the benefits, he also recognises that “We avoided calling out the gaps between rhetoric and reality.”

Carney goes on to say “This fiction was useful [but] this bargain no longer works.”

The reality of that statement is becoming more and more clear, to more and more people. We see it in global politics, the business world, our societies - and we feel it at an individual level.

And the word is starting to get out…
