Narrow Boundaries and Wide Horizons

“Since 2020, the five richest men in the world have seen their fortunes more than double, while almost five billion people have seen their wealth fall.”
— Inequality, Inc [Oxfam report]
Something is broken here.
One of the framings we use at Metacrisis Diplomats is ‘narrow boundaries and wide horizons’. It’s intended as a reminder that there’s more than one way to look at the world.
If we only use narrow boundaries, there’s a good chance we are going to miss things. [Like when we measure ‘success’ purely in terms of a dollar figure].
On the flip side, viewing wide horizons can be hard. It requires seeing lots of different things. [Some of which might jar with our current perspective or understanding].
What it’s not about is ‘right or wrong’, ‘better or worse’.
Thinking about both narrow boundaries and wide horizons is not meant to provide an ‘answer’, or a ‘solution’.
But it can be helpful.
