Sulker, Virtuoso, or Pioneer?

While the noise around AI has died down a bit recently, it’s clear that AI isn’t going away. It continues to improve, and as it does, its impact continues to grow.
I started my working life as a drummer, and the AI conversation reminds me of stories I heard about when drum machines first turned up in the late 70s.
Some drummers moaned and whined about it - and quickly found themselves out of work. [The Sulker].
Other drummers accepted the challenge. They worked to improve their skills, getting radically better at doing what the machines couldn’t do - human feel and groove, subtle variations in patterns rather than constant repetition, improvisation, and more. [The Virtuoso]
Other drummers stopped playing acoustic drums completely. These people immersed themselves in the new technology, and became brilliant drum machine programmers. [The Pioneer]
AI is obviously waaaaay more complex than drum machines - no one ever worried about a Roland TR-808 taking over the world. [You’ll recognise the ‘clap’ sample, though!].
But there might be some parallels …
Sulker, Virtuoso, or Pioneer?
We get to choose.
NB All this ignores the complex ethical decisions and responsibilities that are involved with AI. If you and your organisation are concerned about that aspect, I have a workshop you might be interested in. Contact me for details. Oh - I don’t pull ‘rock faces’ any more, btw 😉
