What Can WE Do?

· Metacrisis, People

As I continue to learn and [perhaps?] understand the metacrisis analysis and what it implies, I often find myself coming back to the same question:

What can I do?

And so, I recently convened a group to explore this very question.

After five sessions together, we hadn’t landed on a single clear answer [I hadn’t really expected to!] - but we did land on something more interesting: wondering if there’s a problem with the question itself.

Have those of us most deeply embedded in Modernity been conditioned to feel an outsized sense of responsibility? [Carbon Footprint, anyone?!]

And is that paralysing us - preventing us from individually taking action?

So now, I am thinking about a different question:

What can we do?

This begins with identifying what “we” means for each of us - which groups and communities am I a part of? Which ones could [should?] I join? And - crucially - who does this “we” exclude?

This is not a time for heroic individuals - it is a time for collective relationship.
